Study abroad Nigerians – As a Nigerian, whether at undergraduate level or Post graduate level, there are times when you consider furthering your studies at a College or University outside the country. I have also found myself in such situation.
Studying in a foreign country comes with many challenges from preparations in your home country(school application, Visa procurement, other expenses) to Arrival in a new Country(cultural difference, weather etc). The limiting factor curtailing nigerians from studying abroad like many other developing countries is Financing(Tuition fee payment, Ticket procurement, living Expenses). That is why you should consider pursuing various Scholarship opportunities available to Nigerians.
But before all that, there are some examination requirements Nigerians should have in their pocket if you will want to study abroad. These requirements are used by the foreign schools to evaluate and assess their foreign applicants preparedness and eligibility to study in their institution.
WHAT EXAMINATION DO I NEED TO TAKE?
This depends on your current educational level and the one you want to pursue. As you Know, or probably would have asked, there of course some schools are abroad which do not need this examination requirements from prospective applicants. so let us begin.
WHO NEEDS TOEFL OR IELTS?
The Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL, is a test which measures people’s English language skills to see if they are good enough to take a course at university or graduate school in English-speaking countries.
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration, with over 3 million tests taken in the last year.
These test should be taking by “everyone” that wants to study abroad(regardless of your educational qualification) to be on a safer side, though quite expensive ranging from #50,000 -#70,000 Nigerian naira. Again, it is pertinent to note that this english requirement can be waived at at the application phase by some schools. You need just one of them TOEFL or IELTS.
WHO NEEDS ACT AND SAT?
The ACT is a standardized test used for college admissions in the United States. The SAT is a standardized test widely used for college admissions in the United States
The SAT contains three sections: Reading, Math, and Writing and Language. The ACT contains four sections: Reading, Math, English, and Science. Both also have an optional essay. Each section has a different format on the ACT compared to the SAT
These test should be taking by Nigerian secondary school leavers who have taken the SENIOR SCHOOL CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION and intend studying in the United states of America.
WHO NEEDS GRE AND GMAT?
The Graduate Management Admission Test GMAT is a computer adaptive test intended to assess certain analytical, writing, quantitative, verbal, and reading skills in written English for use in admission to a graduate management program, such as an MBA.
The graduate record examination (GRE) is a standardized exam used to measure one’s aptitude for abstract thinking in the areas of analytical writing, mathematics and vocabulary. The GRE is commonly used by many graduate schools to determine an applicant’s eligibility for the program.
These exams are taken by Nigerian graduates intending to pursue a Masters degree or Doctorate degree abroad.
In a nutshell, Nigerians should consider taking any of these examinations considering their intending Degree or educational level to ensure a smooth application process.
