Winnie Mandela, the ex-wife of South African anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela, died on Monday at the age of 81, in a hosital in Johannesburg after a long illness.

Winnie Mandela, who was married to Nelson Mandela for 38 years, played a high-profile role in the battle to end white-minority rule but her place in history was also stained by controversy.

“She died after a long illness, for which she had been in and out of hospital since the start of the year. She succumbed peacefully in the early hours of Monday afternoon surrounded by her family and loved ones.” said in statement by Dlamini, a family spokesman.

Winnie Mandela was a controversial figure, at one time afforded heroine status for her courage during Mandela’s 27-year incarceration, but later demonised for how far she was prepared to go in the struggle for liberation.

However, she retained a huge grassroots following and politicians and celebrities around the world have expressed sadness over her death.
